Since opening in 2016, EGTI Muncie’s residential program has provided training in hospitality, food service, healthcare, and inventory distribution. This training is made possible through our partnerships with Courtyard Marriott at Horizon Convention Center, the Courtyard restaurant, and IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.
How Our Program Works
Students are oriented to the training and housing environments and community for the first five to ten days of the training session. During this time, students are also trained on skills related to the Community Access Checklist and how to use the Muncie Indiana Transit System (MITS) to allow them access to the Muncie community. More information about the Community Access Checklist and MITS can be found at Community Engagement – Transportation.
After the orientation phase, students move into training for their specific program. All training programs have been broken down into sequential units that will be individually taught. Initial instruction may occur in the classroom, training lab, or in the natural environment. Once students have shown proficiency in a unit, the next skill in the sequence will be introduced and taught. Skills will build upon one another until students have mastered the entire job. Students participate in job training Monday – Friday morning, and then work readiness skills are the focus during Friday afternoons. Topics covered include a variety of job search and job keeping skills, and interpersonal and personal quality skills necessary for employment.
Daily Schedule
A day begins around 8:00 a.m. and ends around 3:00 p.m. However, the start and end time may vary from program to program. Instructors will provide students with their weekly schedule ahead of time.
Throughout this time, classroom instruction and activities occur along with built-in breaks and lunch. A student’s day may include lessons and activities in the classroom or training lab, job shadowing, and/or on-the-job training in the natural environment. As the student gains skills, they gradually begin taking over more and more of the job.
Available Support
During the training program, EGTI staff are present for individual support and to assist with skills and activities related to the job training. Skill challenges related to employment will be individually worked on with staff. Examples of skill challenges include, but are not limited to, time management, work appearance, social skills on the job, etc.
