In the summer of 2024, EGTI launched its first training program onsite at Allison Transmission in Indianapolis, Indiana, focusing on training individuals with disabilities within the assembly classification.
Different than other training programs offered by EGTI, individuals who enroll in this training program will end the program as full-time employees of Allison Transmission getting paid $21+ per hour with access to benefits after the 90-day probationary period.
Individuals interested in this line of work must:
- Be 18 years or older
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Desire full-time employment
- Have access to transportation to get to and from work
- Be able to stand on their feet for a full workday
- Be available to work any mandatory overtime on Saturdays and Sundays
Training Structure
Students enrolled in EGTI’s training program at Allison Transmission will go through four phases.
Phase One
Students will complete a 7-day onsite training at Allison Transmission led by an EGTI instructor beginning at 6:30am and ending at 3:00pm. These days will include a combination of classroom, hands-on, and plant floor lessons and activities.
Phase Two
Should students continue to display the needed skills to be successful in this career path at Allison Transmission, they will transition into the onboarding phase. During this phase, students will officially submit a job application, upload required new hire documents and complete a required drug and health screening.
During this onboarding phase, students will be supported by their EGTI instructor but are not required to come onsite daily to Allison Transmission.
This phase takes a few weeks to complete.
Phase Three
The students are now considered employees and resume reporting to Allison Transmission for a five-day New Employee Orientation (NEO) from 6:30am-3:00pm. The NEO is led by both the Allison Transmission and UAW union training team. The EGTI instructor is present to provide support when necessary.
Phase Four
New hires transition to the plant floor where they begin training on the equipment within the sub-assembly area of Plant 4. This training is led by a union member and supported by the EGTI instructor. This training and support will be provided for three weeks before the EGTI instructor fades out. At this time, EGTI students will graduate from the program and continue as full-time employees at Allison Transmission.
