Twelve new students stepped into the Courtyard Muncie at Horizon Convention Center to begin their move-in on Sunday, July 10 and started on the road to learning a new vocation, making friendships and furthering their independence. From an ice-breaker pizza party that night to an exciting first day of class on Monday, July 11, students enthusiastically embraced all that this new educational experience has to offer.

One of the first orders of business was to introduce students to the Muncie Indiana Transit System (MITS). They’ll have recurrent training throughout the run of the session in using public transportation and many other soft skills, but their focus will be on learning the job skills required to be successfully employed after graduation. The students in this session are engaged in one of four training areas including:

  • Server Assistant/Host (Restaurant)
  • Patient Transporter (Hospital)
  • Housekeeping:  Heart of House (Hotel)
  • Dishroom/Tray Passing/Pots and Pans:  Dietetics (Hospital)

Launching into the fourth week of training, the students are well into their hands-on job skills development and are enjoying time outside of class solidifying relationships with their peers and mentors and more. We’ve celebrated birthdays, some students have received care packages from home, and all are growing and thriving in this environment that encourages and supports all aspects of learning.
