Multi-year partnership helps fund mentoring and tutoring programs
INDIANAPOLIS | March 15, 2018 | Managed Health Services (MHS) is partnering with The Arc of Indiana Foundation to support mentoring programs and opportunities for people with disabilities through its Erskine Green Training Institute (EGTI).
The multi-year partnership between MHS and The Arc includes support of community engagement opportunities for EGTI students along with fitness and community mentors and tutors.
“The most critical component to a better life is employment,” said Andy Kirby, The Arc of Indiana Foundation executive director. “However, the unemployment rate for people with disabilities is eighty-two percent. This is a population that wants to work but has little access to training and long-term employment opportunities. EGTI is making a difference by successfully training students for jobs in communities throughout Indiana.
“This five-year commitment and partnership will help support fitness and community mentoring opportunities as well as tutoring services to people with disabilities who are students at the training institute,” said MHS CEO Kevin O’Toole. “Students will learn how physical fitness and healthy living choices can be incorporated into everyday life as well as social and academic skills to help them not only gain, but to maintain employment.”
Every EGTI student has the opportunity to participate in the mentoring program, where they are matched with a student from Ball State University. Ball State students are responsible for providing social guidance and helping students gain critical soft skills like appropriate workplace etiquette. Together, the partnership with MHS and The Arc will provide training that will result in successful employment opportunities and healthier living for people with disabilities.
The Arc of Indiana Foundation exists to create postsecondary training opportunities for people with disabilities that empower and lead to meaningful employment. To achieve this mission, Erskine Green Training Institute was developed to address the job training needs of people with disabilities. Through postsecondary educational opportunities that include classroom and on-the-job training by a team of experienced instructors, students develop a strong foundational support structure that improves job placement outcomes.
