Healthcare Support

Upon acceptance into EGTI’s healthcare support programs, students will  need to complete paperwork  and obtain specific immunizations to meet IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital’s employee and intern requirements. Students will also be required to complete a drug screening at IUHBMH. EGTI staff will schedule and arrange a time for students to complete this. The cost of the drug screening is included in tuition. Students must have a photo ID with them at the time of the screening.

Please refer to the Packing List on page 12 of the Student Handbook for clothing and shoe requirements.

The following immunizations are required by the Indiana State Board of Health.

  • Influenza (Please wait to obtain this until instructed to do so by EGTI staff. Depending on the training program dates, the Influenza immunization may not be required.)
  • Two chickenpox (Varicella) or a blood titer to prove immunity
  • Two TB Skin Tests (Please wait to obtain these until the student’s acceptance status has been determined. A TB skin test document will be included within a student’s acceptance packet to complete.)
  • Two MMR
  • TdaP
  • Hepatitis B–only required for the Environmental Services training program
  • Drug Screening–students will complete this at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital

Nutrition Services (Dishroom and Tray Transport)

Provides support services within the Nutrition Services department relating to meal responsibilities. Practices safety and sanitation procedures and universal precautions in all work duties.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Navigates different areas within the hospital
  • Follows all safety and sanitation precautions
  • Completes duties within the dishroom including, but not limited to, washing pots and pans, unloading soiled trays, loading and unloading dish machine, cleaning equipment and floors, and disposing of trash
  • Delivers food truck to staff on patient floors and retrieves soiled food trays
  • Uses free time productively to perform additional cleaning and organizing tasks
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times by following HIPAA guidelines
  • Creates a work environment that promotes safety for patients, staff, and customers
  • Reports any safety concerns to the supervisor

Environmental Services (Housekeeping)

Provides support in Environmental Services (housekeeping) as assigned which relate to housekeeping responsibilities. Practices safety and sanitation procedures and universal precautions in all work duties.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Navigates different areas within the hospital
  • Follows all safety and sanitation precautions
  • Appropriately utilizes cleaning chemicals for a variety of cleaning assignments
  • Completes the cleaning routine within patient rooms: sweeping, mopping, damp dusting, cleaning equipment, cleaning restroom, changing bed linens, and collecting trash and soiled linens
  • Appropriately disposes infectious and general trash using universal precautions
  • Appropriately disposes soiled linens by tying bag and sending through chute
  • Completes the correct type of clean depending on the room type (i.e. stayover or discharge)
  • Cleans public restrooms in assigned area
  • Takes inventory of supplies stored in assigned closet
  • Keeps cleaning cart clean and orderly
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times by following HIPAA guidelines
  • Creates a work environment that promotes safety for patients, staff, and customers
  • Reports any safety concerns to the supervisor

Patient Transport

Responsible for safely transporting patients and visitors to and from testing sites and other locations within the hospital as needed. Responsible to provide excellent care and be efficient at all times.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Navigates different areas within the hospital
  • Has great upper body strength to assist with transferring patients from a bed to stretcher and push throughout halls and up and down slopes
  • While transporting, maintains awareness of patient safety
  • Appropriately manipulates all types of patient transport equipment (i.e. stretcher, bed, wheelchair, etc.)
  • Secures patient chart, IV pole, and/or belongings during transport
  • Appropriately utilizes hospital technology (e.g. pager, phone, ear piece, radio and computer) for all transports
  • Follows hand-off procedure when communicating with the caregiver and nurse
  • Follows oxygen transport procedures including attaching the oxygen tank and monitoring oxygen levels during transport
  • Cleans transport equipment after each use
  • Communicates well with patients, nurses, therapists, and other patient transport staff to allow for smooth operations
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times by following HIPAA guidelines
  • Creates a work environment that promotes safety for patients, staff, and customers
  • Reports any safety concerns to the supervisor

Supply Chain: Inventory Distribution


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Navigates different areas within the hospital
  • Utilizes a hand-held scanner to document medical and non-medical supplies needed
  • Counts the current quantity of supplies and reads the product label to determine the quantity needed (i.e. there are six items present, but the product labels states 10 are required).
  • Locates and gathers the correct amount of supplies needed from the supply warehouse utilizing an order form
  • Pushes supply cart up to each assigned area
  • Stocks supplies within the appropriate slot within each assigned area
  • Assists with keeping the warehouse organized by removing empty boxes and keeping inventory in their assigned location
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times by following HIPAA guidelines
  • Creates a work environment that promotes safety for patients, staff, and customers
  • Reports any safety concerns to the supervisor
